Since 1974, NADA acupuncture or ear acupuncture has been used as an aid in the treatment of addiction (alcohol and other drugs and nicotine). A doctor in the substance abuse unit at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx in New York, Michael Smith, began using the method that year, which had been described by a neurosurgeon, Hsiang Lai Wen, in Hong Kong. It was first tried on patients who were addicted to opiates, but subsequently patients with other addictions (psychopharmaceuticals, other drugs and alcohol and nicotinics) have received the same treatment. Acupuncture calms patients and reduces cravings for alcohol, drugs or cigarettes. The method can be a good supplement for detoxification.

The treatment is preferably given in groups, but also individually based on the client’s wishes and special needs.

The method cannot be said to be a treatment for an addiction, but only an exceptionally good aid in the treatment of such.

In NADA acupuncture, 5 needles are inserted into each ear. Sometimes you supplement with needles in the hand, head and foot.

The method has now spread all over the USA and to other countries: England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia and Sweden, etc. In order to guarantee that all practitioners of the technique maintain an even quality standard, Dr. Smith has formed NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association), which has determined which standards should apply, and in the countries that use the technique, national organizations have been formed, which in each country is responsible for applying the same treatment protocol in its internal training and in practical use.

In Sweden, this association is called NADA/Sweden.
